Both authors, writing in the early 30s, are extremely concerned about current theories of planetary formation; this was the period when most scientists believed that the Solar System started when another star had a near miss with our triplqnetary sun, dragging matter out of it by tidal forces.

I loved how it shaped human history. It consists of two parts. The powers granted by each Lens are limited only by the bearer’s ability to perceive what they’re doing as possible. Flash Gordon is laughable, and was laughable even when I was a child.

Yes, the characters are a bit “stock”, but the plotting is extraordinarily imaginative, the writing style fluid and propulsive. The Arisians defy this on numerous occasions, repeatedly stating that good and evil are ultimately relative, and the Arisians and the races of Civilization recognize that different races will have Blue and Orange Morality.

Incorruptibility is one of the prerequisites that determines whether or not someone is worthy of becoming a Lensman. I can see the seeds that planted in later sci-fi authors and there are some great ideas here, but I found it was poorly written and at times the author really didn’t seem to know where he was planning on going and it meandered a lot. For reasons I no longer recall, I got rid of these books at some point, probably during a house move when I was trying to de-clutter.

I am a bit deceived with this one, but it is my fault.

Triplanetary (Lensman, #1) by E. E. Smith – Risingshadow

Don’t trust my rating of this book; it’s part of my childhood, when I read it over and over again, and I have no way of objectively rating it.

The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster than light travel.

Space agent manages to find out the secrets of alien science in a couple of days, despite being held prisoner the whole time?

Actually, Virginia’s being fed a crock of bullshit. For instance, he had characters matching “intrinsic velocities” in ways that conveniently ignored just how astronomical in the literal sense those velocity differences must have been, up to and including high fractions of lightspeed. The convention newsletter is named “Helmuth”, of course. These late revisions of “Triplanetary” and the rest of the series involved a major change in the presentation of the stories.

Since pulp sci-fi is not trillanetary famous lenxman its deep characters or subtle plots, I didn’t really expect from this book much more than gripping action and quite possibly flashing ray-guns, but I was still disappointed.

The Blue and Orange part comes in because Palanians consider cowardice and guile to be virtues. The DeLameters do have power settingsalso.

Some of the scifi concepts are still in use today, like laser beams called “rays” and video screens called “plates”. Triplanteary 28, Fintan rated it it was ok Shelves: The iron is used in this lenssman by the Nevians to power their interstellar ships and their power plants at home.

I understand that this is important in the sci-fi canon, and that it was a precursor to many other sci-fi developments. Crazy, good, fun stuff.

The scope of the story is galactic, and yet Smith takes us in for a close look at the gritty action.

Triplanetary, First in the Lensman Series

Triplanetary 1 3 Sep 05, Please may we have MORE I also struggled, and I became what I am now – whatever it is. The Arisians’ “Visualization of the Cosmic All”, which effectively gives them precognition from sufficiently analyzing a person or object.

While a lot of it is cheesy and thin compared to works of today, I enjoy the over-the-top action, and lack of concern for scientific accuracy. A Triplanetary Patrol agent named Conway Costigan is captured by the Nevians, along with his love interest, Clio Marsden, and an old space-hand and friend, Captain Bradley. This conflict is complicated by the arrival of the technologically superior, extra-Solar, amphibian-like Nevians, resulting in the first interstellar war involving humans.

The movie and a Compilation Movie of part of the series were dubbed in English by Harmony Gold USA; later, Streamline Pictures redubbed the movie with the original soundtrack and no cuts for content.

Some are actually genuinely good people who will fight fanatically against the forces of Civilization to their last breath — Because the very effective Boskonian propaganda machine has convinced them that Civilization is an evil empire out to enslave and exterminate their people.

It becomes a contributor to the Lensman ‘verse’s Future Slang by being the proverbial most stupid thing in existence that still counts as a living creature. However, this book isn’t trying to be a nuanced and thought-provoking tale; it is simply striving to be entertaining escapism. The Lenses, which kill anyone other than their owners who tries to wield them.

They use a machine that lets them escape unnoticed to the craft to escape. And of course, the famous negabombs”antimatter” projectiles that come in every size up to planetary mass.

Advanced embedding details, examples, and help! Most science fiction I read is from the last couple of decades, and none of it is even remotely as action-packed as Triplanetary. I can honestly say that. Why didn’t anyone think of that? It was a surprise. And they dowith colliding planets from another universe travelling at fifteen times the speed of light.
