Yes, there are two books before this one in the Harry Hole series and they have since been translated as well, but The Redbreast was the first to be translated.

Harry realizes he is wrong when he comes across the actual killer’s journal, in which he attacks the Norwegian Royal Family and other government officials who fled to England during the occupation, and who later deemed the Norwegian Nazi sympathisers to be ‘traitors’, despite the latter’s resistence to the onslaught of the Communist forces of the USSR.

The novel begins during former President Clinton’s visit to Norwaywhere Harry reluctantly ends up playing an important role.

Harry is an ardent Harry Hole fan, just ask him. A very, very good book and highly recommended. Joo of the mission Harry is tasked with lead to him investigating neo-Nazi activity in Norway, and delving into a crime that has its roots in the battlefields of the Eastern Front of World War II.

We’re gonna laugh and snicker every time I mention Harry Hole in this review so go ahead and get it out of your systems. The killer also reveals the details behind the mysterious reappearance of Gudeson’s body in the trenches and the truth behind Fauke’s supposed defection. This author requires some concentration, as the plot is quite complex, but it is worth it. The reader, however, has seen it all unfold, and, unlike Harry, knows exactly why this colleague has been killed.


Evidence that some kind of assassination is being planned sends Harry in pursuit of the rifle’s purchaser, and when it becomes clear that the murdered tramp once fought with the Nazis, he begins to suspect what we already know: Jana Jo Nesbo is a great author, he is actually the author who got me hooked on crime books.

At the end of The Redbreastthe reader still knows more than the detective. Recommended reading for anyone who enjoys a good thriller but start with book number one The Bat as it is really worth getting to know Harry first. But, overall, this entire book is a lot of fun.

Harry doesn’t have to worry too much about outside interference, as he’s allowed to do pretty much as he pleases; it’s only when someone perceives him as a romantic rival that he’s shunted off briefly to a posting in Sweden. Then he receives a report of a rare and unusual gun, with possible links to Neo Nazi activity, being smuggled into the country. Hole shares a revbreast attraction with a colleague named Rakel, who is reluctant to take things further with him due to a custody battle for her son, Oleg; unbeknownst to her and Hole, the matter is being orchestrated by Rakel’s superior, who is also infatuated with her.
