He reflects some local aspects of the text in the more urgent rhythms of “tell her,” the awed voyeuristic repeat of “graces spied,” and the literal solos springing out of the choral desert as the poet imagines the rose alone in a barren setting.
The rose in the poem called forth beauty, not only from the beloved recipient of the rose, but also from the depths of Whitacre ‘s fertile and imaginative musical mind.
Whitacre follows the metaphor and stretches his nascent compositional talents to create a magnificent lovel reflection of the poetry. The request that the woman “suffer herself to be desired” expands upwards in sympathetic dissonance, the rose’s death casts back down the musical ranges, and Whitacre reserves powerful harmonic motions for “all things rare” and the final gaze upon the “wondrous and fair” rose.
