In the context of these ideas, Tocqueville asks himself whether Catholicism is the religion that suits democratic times. It does as little of the work of each democacy as possible, without worrying about tomorrow. Ironically there is far too much to cover to try to give an adequate review. The idea that it was written by a Frenchman always worried me, not for any particular political reasons but more so because I was afraid the connection would not be made between the author’s intentions and the translation produced.
