It was awarded the Caldecott Honor in One of my favorites as a child. It is Maine, it is blueberry picking, it is “life as it should be.
This continues as she and her mother concentrate on the berries and gradually get separated on the hill.

A sequel, One Morning in Mainetakes place a few years later, and blyeberries little Sal roberrt her mother, and introduces Sal’s father and younger sister. It takes me back to when we could pick ffor on our property twice each summer. Set in a small town in Maine this picture book piece uses a single dark blue color and block printing for the illustrations.
And the story is fun, too, even though that situation in real life might end up being a sad story. Brooke and Amy have already pinpointed the two major reasons why: Follow up the shared story experience by enjoying a piece of bread smothered in jelly. And Little Sal and her mother went down the other side of Blueberry Hill, picking berries all the way, and drove home with food to can for next winter — a whole pail of blueberries and three more besides.
Perhaps this book would go well with a pint of blueberries to share with your child.

I long ago lost my original copy, but liked the book enough to buy it again as an adult so that I’d have it in my collection.
