Was a bit uncertain on it when I first began reading it but quickly got caught unarrqnged in the story. That is a shame that I dismissed it though, because Un arranged marriage tells a compelling and believable story of a teenage boy’s fight for his individuality and freedom. This is when Manny meets a nice girl, called Lisa, for the first time. Because of the bad ending, the book gets 3 of 5 stars.

I was rooting for Manny until the end, I believe that he will make something good out of his life. None of the rest of the family notices that Manny escapes because Jag put weed in their food.

Both speak mainly Punjabi and work in a factory. Some of it is set in the Punjab, which as I’ve been to Jalandhar, which also features made it particularly interesting to me. It made a change to see the problems of growing up in the UK in a traditional Punjabi family from a boy’s point of view.

I am totally convinced about that the author could have done more. When he gets back to England, his father beats him, telling him that he still expects him to go ahead with the balli.

He can do whatever he wants and he lives his own life with his own rules but there is one thing he lost: Uncle Jag lives in Australia and has got a girlfriend and a daughter.

I was deferment to finish the torture as soon as possible so that I could reward myself with a decent book after this. They ignore Manny and pretend that he has never existed but nevertheless he is a bit afraid of them trying to make him ra back.

His mother may as well have been absent, as he noted that she barely ever even spoke to him. A moving story of alienation and identity, Un arranged Marriage follows teenager Manny as he struggles to maintain his links to his family and live his own life.

He finds the ignorance gai racism of his family difficult to bear, particularly as his best friend is black and he falls for a white girl.
