He’s one hell of a writer, and jsffrey seems to capture the decline of American society without judgement, rant or sociological nudge. The book is told all through second-hand accounts. The fact that these girls were in the prime of their life in the midst of their burgeoning womanhood makes this book all the more poetic and unnerving. We don’t even know exactly who the narrators are–it is narrated in first person plural and the name and even number of narrators is left vague. Honestly, every couple of pages I would think to myself “When Jeffrey Eugenides thought to himself that he should write this from the outside view he had one of the best epiphanies ever.

The father, Ronald, is a math teacher at the local high school. The novel closes with the men confessing that they had loved the girls, but that they will never know the motives behind the suicides.

At any rate, the memory of that night was superseded by that of Lux’s being hoisted into the EMS truck, because, despite discrepancies of times and space, it was Lux’s lips we tasted, not Clabault’s. I feel like I need to read it again to pick up on so many elements I may have overlooked or not fully appreciated the first time around.

I usually see storytelling as being more important than the writing, but in this case I couldn’t separate the two — the writing is beautiful and the style feels essential to the story. It was a very intriguing approach to telling the story. So much better the second time around and I loved it the first, suicudes Thanks for telling skicides about the problem. Such a moody novel with sparse dialogue, but what is there, is so right on and often funny I’ll definitely be watching the movie adaptation because I’ve heard that although it’s very well done, it’s very different.

All vifgin sins aside, the metaphor is utterly unclear to me. But moments like these are few, and bad sex writing aside, I am pleased to report that the novel more than holds up.
